"No One Should Have to Choose:
Supporting Safe Observance and Jewish Belonging"
Too often, Jews who are unable to safely observe Jewish rituals have to choose between safe accommodations and feeling like they are fully part of the Jewish community.
We’re here to change that.

About this program:
In a recent survey of Jews who are unable to safely fast, 85% reported feeling shame on Jewish ritual fast days. Seventy percent said they had attempted to fast anyway because eating felt wrong. Eighty-six percent said they had felt alone.
If you are a Jew who is unable to safely fast, you might have felt like eating on Yom Kippur feels impossible.
If you have a family member or friend who is unable to safely fast, you might have spent hours, days, or even weeks each year trying to convince them not to endanger themselves by fasting.
If that hasn’t been enough, we understand. Because this isn’t just a personal challenge—it’s a systemic one. And A Mitzvah to Eat has a systemic solution.
Join A Mitzvah to Eat’s Founding Director, Sarah Osborne, for an online program.
We’ll talk about the strong implicit messaging that eating on Yom Kippur is wrong for everyone— including people who are unable to safely fast. We’ll share what A Mitzvah to Eat is doing to support Jewish belonging alongside safe observance.
We’ll also share the impact of our work, including the finding that 94% of survey respondents described it as potentially or definitely life-saving.
Then, we’ll talk about what A Mitzvah to Eat needs in order to expand our reach to even more Jews needing ritual accommodations in the months leading up to Yom Kippur. And we’ll invite you to be a part of this work.
Together, we can build a Jewish community where no one has to choose between safe observance and Jewish belonging.
